Title: Own Web Site
Class: Webmaster
Date: 02.04.2007

So you want to make your own web site?

Are you certified insane? No? Oh well, you might wish that you were later on. There is nothing like a web site to burst your bloated ego and bring you down to Earth with a bump!

What's wrong with having a web site? If you think that you could be one of those one-in-a-million success stories, who am I to stop you. Why not reach for the stars if you want. You are probably a much nicer person having an optimistic approach to your life, than the majority of pessimists who seem to do nothing else but cry about their hard luck. Yes, I wish you all the luck in the world. Take your chance for a little fame and fortune by all means.

Probably, you should stop reading this page just here! But I know you wont! Those one-in-a-million successes are so rare because you certainly wont be one in a million but more like one in 110 million. That's how many websites there are (at the time of writing) and the number is increasing by several million each month. Why would anyone visit your site instead of any of the other 110 million? How would they even find you?

Let's assume that you have just made up a brand new site. In the first few days, the only people who see it are you, your mother and the cat. But don't worry too much because it doesn't stay like that for long. Oh no, it gets worse, only you are looking at it!

You could always tell your friends about it. What a foolish mistake that would be. You thought that you had friends? They will tell you about the sites they made while in Class 2 just to make you feel like a geriatric. Then, they compare your site with the latest 'cool' sites, and tell you directly that your site is about as tasteful as cabbage.

Then, you get listed on Google - and still nobody visits! What is going on? Or rather, what isn't?

You have to be realistic. In a city like Karachi, about 16 million population, only about one per cent of people are educated enough and speak your language. Out of them, again about one percent have a computer and have the time to browse the Internet. It is well known that the vast majority of Internet users simply waste time chatting and almost never visit web sites. Then perhaps one per cent of this remainder would be interested in the subject of your web site. There you have it - there are sixteen people to find. No wait! One of them is you. Make that fifteen people who might be interested enough to visit - if they knew about your site.

That isn't the case in other countries, you say. Isn't it? I think it is! The Internet is now so big that you simply cannot browse in the true sense anymore. The chances of finding an interesting site by accident is just about zero. Time is the most important factor. We simply don't have enough of it. Even when you search for some topic, do you plough through dozens of pages in the search results? I think not.

Well suppose you were very lucky and found your fifteen visitors, or whatever number your target audience was. They came, they saw, they disappeared - never to be seen again! Now what?

You could always have your site translated into Chinese! I think a little therapy is a better choice. "Doctor, why did I make a web site?"

This page is based on reality and any similarity to fiction, or fictional characters either living or dead, is purely coincidental.
